DinoMac Masonry Ltd. is a Prince Edward Island masonry company led by Dean MacArthur, a third-generation mason with more than 20 years of hands-on experience in natural stone, brick, chimneys, foundations, fireplaces, repointing and heritage masonry restoration.
The company works across PEI on homes, churches, commercial properties, private estates and older buildings where the right repair often depends on understanding how the original masonry was built, how water is moving through it and which materials are compatible with what is already there.
Field experience matters. Older masonry rarely fails for only one reason. Material, moisture, previous repairs, exposure and the way the wall was originally built all need to be considered together.

A third-generation mason.
Masonry runs in Dean's family. As a third-generation mason, he grew up with a trade where knowledge is passed on by working beside people who understand stone, brick, mortar and the consequences of getting a repair wrong.
More than 20 years of hands-on work has added another layer to that trade knowledge. New construction teaches layout, production and finish. Repair work teaches diagnosis. Heritage work teaches restraint, because sometimes the best repair is the one that removes the least original material.
DinoMac's approach comes from combining those lessons: understand what the masonry is doing, identify the actual source of deterioration, preserve sound work where possible, and use a repair that makes sense for the building rather than simply making the defect disappear for a season.
What 20+ Years Teaches You
The visible defect and the root cause are often different things.
✓A cracked joint can be a symptom of movement, not just failed mortar.
✓A spalled brick can point toward repeated saturation or trapped moisture.
✓A wet basement wall may be telling you about drainage outside the building.
✓An old wall may need compatible repair, not simply the strongest modern mortar available.
How DinoMac Approaches a Repair
Start with the building, not the sales pitch.
A useful estimate should be based on what is actually happening in the masonry and what the owner is trying to achieve.
2. Find the Mechanism
Consider moisture, freeze-thaw exposure, movement, bearing, flashing, grading, previous repairs, material compatibility and concealed wall construction.
3. Preserve What Is Sound
Good original brick, stone and mortar should not be removed simply to make the repair area larger. Selective work is often better work.
4. Match the Repair to the Building
The mortar, joint profile, replacement units, flashing details and finished appearance should suit the existing masonry and its exposure.
5. Fix Water Management Too
Repointing cannot compensate for a failed crown, short downspout, bad flashing or grade that keeps the same masonry wet.
6. Know When Masonry Is Not the Whole Problem
Structural movement, rotten framing, roofing, drainage or other building issues may need to be addressed alongside the masonry rather than hidden behind it.

Natural Stone
Stonework is one of DinoMac's defining specialties.
Natural stone does not come out of a box perfectly uniform. Good stonework depends on reading shape, proportion, bed, joint width and the relationship between individual pieces before they are set.
That same understanding is useful in restoration. Older stone walls should not automatically be dismantled because they look irregular. Sound original material can often be retained while failed joints or unstable sections are repaired selectively.
On PEI, that experience applies to houses, foundations, churches, estate walls, pillars, fireplaces, steps and other masonry where the stone is a major part of the building's character.

Old masonry deserves diagnosis before replacement.
Heritage masonry behaves differently from many modern assemblies. Older brick, stone and mortar often absorb and release moisture in ways that need to remain part of the repair strategy.
Mortars that are too hard, dense coatings, aggressive cleaning and shallow cosmetic repointing can all create new problems while hiding the original one. The goal is to understand how the wall was built and choose a repair that works with it.
